How To Apply

There are a number of resources available to help you finance your Northeastern education. We recommend that every student and family consider applying for financial aid, regardless of their income and assets.

Depending on your student type, the financial aid application deadline dates and requirements may vary. All students are encouraged to complete their financial aid application materials by the priority filing date to ensure consideration for all available need-based financial aid programs for which they are eligible. Additionally, all first-year applicants who meet the aid application deadline, and submit all required financial aid documents, will receive their financial aid offer in coordination with their offer of admission. Once the financial aid awarding process has begun, financial aid awards will continue to be released on a rolling basis for students who complete their aid application materials.

FAFSA

All undergraduate students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for federal and state funding. For the 2024-2025 Academic Year only, the FAFSA will be delayed until December 2023. While the Department of Education has not yet announced the date it will become available, plan to complete your FAFSA as soon as possible after the December release.

After you have submitted your FAFSA, your Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent to you directly, typically via email, by the U.S. Department of Education. Be sure to review your Student Aid Report completely. Your SAR will also indicate if you have been selected for verification, as there will be an asterisk (*) next to your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). If you are selected for verification, you may be required to submit additional documents. Should additional documentation be required, you will receive a notification from our office with additional instructions. Or, you may check through your Student Hub. Once you have logged in, choose “Resources” then select “Financial Services’ and “My Financial Aid Status”. 

If you are a returning student, the verification process must be completed before your financial aid award will be processed.

 

CSS Profile

In addition to completing the FAFSA, all first-year undergraduate applicants, including transfer applicants, are required to complete the CSS Profile to be considered for need-based institutional funding. You may complete the CSS Profile online beginning October 1.

Students whose biological parents are not married to each other are also required to provide noncustodial parent household information. If a student is not able to contact the noncustodial parent, they may submit a CSS Profile Waiver Request for the Noncustodial Parent.

College Board’s Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC)

The College Board’s Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC), is a secure platform that collects documents from prospective and incoming financial aid applicants on behalf of Northeastern University’s Office of Student Financial Services.

After you submit your CSS Profile, you will receive an email from the College Board with instructions on creating your IDOC account. After creating your IDOC account, you may upload application materials, as requested by Northeastern University, through your IDOC portal.
